Bolivian Rosewood

These rosewood vases are made from stumps left by well-managed forests in Santa Cruz.  Local artisans use traditional techniques from Jesuit missions that were established in the 16th century.  The combination of the stunning wood and seamless carving techniques makes a one of a kind timeless creation.  Check out the other one of kind objects sold at L’aviva Home here…

To Each Their Own

I always say “To each their own” when I come across a color palette or style I don’t automatically love.  Life would be boring if we all dressed alike or styled our home alike.  Having said that, I don’t typically use iron when designing a home.  But, anything in moderation is okay, right?  Right!  I love this craft dining table from Iron Accents.  At first I thought how wonderful for kids…you know, color while they wait for dinner.  But how great for adults too.  When you are hosting tapas or spaghetti and things get a little messy from sharing or the sauces just clear the plates, pull the paper until a fresh sheet covers the top, and tear!  That was one easy clean up.

End Of The Summer

I love this time of year for many reasons.  One-My birthday is at the end of August.  Two-Fall is coming soon.  Three-New product lines!  Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams has released their new Fall 2009 line.  There are too many special pieces to say I have ONE favorite but I do love the Fleetwood Entertainment Console.  It has 4 drawers and one door with an adjustable shelf.  It also has a ventilated back for cords.  The front has solid wood carvings that are stylish and can also serve as handles.  Pull out the drawers for an added surprise, they are tomato red!  How fun!

Queen Of The Castle

Bobby McAlpine debuted his furniture line through Lee Industries in 2002.  He is a well known interior designer, architect, custom furniture designer, and author.  His line through Lee Industries is quite interesting.  The lines, proportions, and details make each piece special.  Here is his Shelter Wing Chair.  It is 32″ W x 37″ D x 46″ H with a nailhead and mini welt combo.  The tailored skirt adds a touch of sophistication in an unusually shaped chair.  The back is down and there is an 11″ H x 23″ W bolster pillow for additional comfort and style.  I can see a pair of these at the head of a dining table, a single chair in front of a writing desk, or the loveseat version in front of a bed used as a footboard/bench.

David Hicks Forever

Chances are you own one of David Hicks’ creations.  It could be on your clothing, sofa, pillow, flooring, product packaging and so on.  He was a self-made British designer that got his start by decorating his own house. Some of his earliest clients were Vidal Sassoon, Mrs Conde Nast and the Duchess of Rutland.  Not too shabby.  He soon moved into designing carpets and apartments around the world.  The carpeting he designed was bold, geometric, intricate and eye catching.  Most have been transformed into fabric lines, wallpaper and now stone mosaics.  I was lucky enough to work with David’s son, Ashley, on the 2nd fabric collection through Lee Jofa by Groundworks.  It was an amazing experience and I will always treasure it.  The latest David Hicks medium is tile.  Studium will turn his patterns into a mosaic for your floors or backsplash.  The tiles can be made custom in scale and material.  You just can’t go wrong!

Mercy Me

I love this desk!  I own the console version and after 4 years it is still as stunning as the day I had it delivered.  The file storage is a great addition and practical.  Here it is shown in natural walnut but there are other finish options.  It is 60″ x 19″ x 30″ high.  Perfect for any size space…trust me…I have it in a 9 x 12 guest bedroom as a vanity.

Turtle Fever

I feel like everywhere I turn I see turtles!  They are on pillows, wall art, lighting, etc…Turtles have such a wonderful pattern on their shells.  The pattern looks graphic when printed on a pillow, it makes a funky texture when used as a light, and as a learning tool for artists today.

The pillow is from Naked Decor.  It is 18 x 18 with a hand silkscreened turtle image on both sides.

The translucent porcelain tortoise shell from Jonathan Adler is hand sculpted with a polished nickel base.  It is 15″ w x 25″ high.

The hand drawn study of the turtle is from Albertus Seba’s “Cabinet of Curiosities” dating back to the 1730’s.  Natural Curiosities brings artists like Albertus back to life by studying their work, learning their technique, and recreating the stunning images so that anyone can enjoy them today.

Miss Dorothy Draper

Have you ever been asked “Who would you want to meet dead or alive?”  Easy.  Dorothy Draper.  She was the original Martha Stewart.  Dorothy did it all!  She was an incredibly well known designer who has been credited by many designers today with being their inspiration.  She wrote hostess books, she really urged women to try DIY (do it yourself) projects, she started “In the Pink” beauty brand selling soaps, dusting powder, bath oil, etc…, she designed aircraft interiors, and in my opinion made bold and large scale patterns okay!  The doors she designed would be enough to impress but the graphic patterns on the floors, ceiling, furniture, and any other square inch made every project truly special.  Oly Studio has a stunning chest of drawers that is reminiscent of Dorothy Draper.  Bold, high style, and high quality.  See some other unique Oly Studio pieces at Urban Dwellings Design.
